Thirty-five years is a long time to do anything well. For some of our members, it is longer than they have been alive. For others, it covers most of the mornings they have spent chasing a stronger, healthier version of themselves. Since the Michigan Athletic Club first opened in East Lansing, fitness trends have come and gone, whole families have grown up on our courts and in our pool, and thousands of neighbors have walked in looking for the same simple thing: a place to move and feel good.

What has not changed is the reason we are here. The MAC has always been about you. Your goals, your week, the routine that keeps you steady, and the people who make you want to come back. As we mark this anniversary, we want to look at how the club has helped mid-Michigan stay active for three and a half decades, and why now is a good time to start your own chapter here.

1. Thirty-Five Years of Showing Up for You

The most useful thing a fitness club can offer is not a fancy machine or a trendy class. It is consistency. For 35 years, the MAC has been the place mid-Michigan counts on to be open and ready when you arrive, whether you come in before work or later, after a long day. That kind of reliability is harder to find than it sounds, and we have worked to protect it.

As the only hospital-based health club in mid-Michigan, connected to U of M Health Sparrow, we have always treated wellness as more than a single workout. We think about your health over the long haul, not just the hour you spend on the floor. Some members who joined years ago still see the same faces at the front desk. Newer members tend to say the place feels familiar faster than they expected. Trust as that gets built slowly, one open door and one good morning at a time, and it is what the rest of the club rests on.

2. A Class for Every Mood and Every Morning

If variety is what keeps you going, you will not run out of it here. More than 120 group fitness classes fill the schedule each week, so there is almost always something that matches your energy and the time you actually have that day.

Some mornings call for yoga, rolling out a mat and giving yourself a slower start. Other days you want the lights low and the music loud in an indoor cycling class that does the motivating for you. There are early classes for people who like to be finished before the day really starts, and later ones for anyone who does their best thinking and sweating in the evening. Pilates regulars talk about how much steadier their core and posture feel after a few weeks. The real advantage of a schedule this size is that your routine can change as you do. The person who joined last winter can try something completely different this summer, without ever leaving the building and without paying extra.

3. Racquet Sports That Turn Into Friendships

Plenty of long friendships at the MAC started with a single game. Racquet sports have been part of the club from early on, and we have added courts over the years to keep up with how much this community loves to play.

Pickleball has taken over mid-Michigan, and our 16 pickleball courts give you room to jump in whether you are brand new or already chasing down every dink. Tennis players get 10 indoor courts, so a rainy forecast never cancels your plans, plus 4 outdoor courts for the days when playing under the sun is the whole point. Prefer something faster and sweatier? The 6 racquetball courts pack a serious workout into a short window. The games are the excuse. The people are the reason anyone keeps coming back, and 35 years of leagues and regular matches will tell you the same.

4. A Pool That Has Seen It All

Water welcomes just about everyone. Our aquatics area has been home to serious lap swimmers, to parents coaxing a nervous four-year-old off the steps, and to members whose knees or backs finally found a workout that does not fight them.

For a lot of our regulars, the pool is a morning ritual, a few quiet laps before the rest of the day starts making demands. For others, it is recovery after a hard week, or the only kind of movement that feels good right now. That range is really the point. Whether you are training for something or just letting the water take the edge off your stress, aquatics has been part of the MAC since the beginning, and it is not going anywhere.

5. Strength, Sport, and Coaching Built Around You

Feeling great changes more than your workout. It changes how you haul groceries up the stairs and how you stand when you walk into a room. The MAC has spent 35 years helping members get there in a way that fits real life. Our strength and conditioning areas give you space to lift and move at whatever pace you are on, with the equipment to keep the progress coming. On any given afternoon, you will find first-timers figuring out the machines a few feet away from members who have been lifting here since back when the club first opened its doors.

If you like a little competition, the basketball courts have hosted more pickup games and friendly trash talk than anyone could count. And when you want someone in your corner, our personal trainers are here for it. Many of them hold nutrition certifications, so they can help you think about how your training and your everyday eating fit together. A good trainer does more than count your reps. They remember your goals, they adjust when your life shifts, and they notice the small wins you might otherwise shrug off.

6. A Community That Feels Like Home

Ask a longtime member why they have stayed, and they rarely point to a single machine or class. They talk about the people. The MAC has always been a place where you run into familiar faces, catch up in the middle of a workout, and feel like you belong somewhere.

Being part of U of M Health Sparrow means we have always cared about members as people first. Families have grown up inside these walls, with kids turning into teenagers turning into adults who now bring their own kids through the door. Neighbors have become workout partners, and workout partners have become the reason some people never miss a Monday. That feeling, more than any single amenity, is what has carried the club through 35 years. It is also the part you cannot really see on a tour, so you will have to feel it for yourself.

Celebrate 35 Years With Us for Just $35

A birthday this big deserves a party, and we want you at ours. To celebrate 35 years of keeping mid-Michigan moving, we are offering *$35 enrollment for new members. Think of it as a thank-you to this community, and an open invitation to start your own history at the club.

Everything we have built over three and a half decades comes with it: the 120-plus weekly classes, the pickleball and tennis courts, the pool, the strength floor, and a personal trainer ready to help the moment you want one. Joining has rarely been this easy, and it has rarely meant this much. See why so many of your neighbors already call the MAC their second home.

Here Is to the Next 35 Years

A club, like the people who fill it, is shaped by the seasons it lives through. Thirty-five years of Michigan winters and Michigan summers have come and gone since we opened, each one bringing new members and new reasons to show up. Plenty has changed in that time. The heart of the place has not. As we head into the next chapter, we are already looking forward to the goals you will hit and the mornings you will spend here. The next 35 years start the day you walk in.

Ready to celebrate with us? Join the MAC for just $35, and let 35 years of wellness become part of your story.
